Our History

Jenkins County Medical Center stands on a foundation of over a century of care and community service. Its story begins in 1915, when Dr. Q.A. (Quincey Arnold) Mulkey founded Millen’s first hospital in the former J.H. Daniel Sr. residence on Cotton Avenue. That location, now home to the Pal Theater and Café on Cotton, served as the heart of local healthcare for many years.

In 1946, Dr. Mulkey moved the hospital to Daniel Street, where the county library is now located. His son, Dr. Arnold Peel “A.P.” Mulkey, joined him at the hospital after serving in World War II. Together, they cared for generations of families in what became known as Mulkey Hospital.

In 1974, Jenkins County built a new facility to meet the growing medical needs of the community. Named Jenkins County Hospital, it continued the Mulkey family’s legacy of service. At that time, the hospital included a full maternity ward, and many Jenkins County residents today were born within its walls. Though ownership changed in later decades, the hospital never closed its doors.

In 2021, the citizens of Jenkins County reclaimed local ownership through the Jenkins County Hospital Authority, beginning a new era under the name Jenkins County Medical Center. Today, JCMC proudly carries forward a legacy built on compassion, commitment, and community.
